WHO DO YOU CONSIDER AS THE AUTHOR OF A MOVIE?
Several schools of thought have variously credited the authorship of a film to a number of personnel. Some say the editor should be the author. Some opine that for his worth in the production, the cinematographer, and not the editor, should be the author. Some critics insist that it must be the screen writer because he crafts the screenplay.

ReplyDeleteThe author of a movie can be any member of the production crew or even a cast in the movie. Sure, everybody have its role to play. However, we most note that the idea or story was initiated by someone who might not even be in the production team. So basically, the Producer or any member of a production who initiate the story line of a movie can be said to be the author of such movie. Akinwale Adebayo
ReplyDeleteSir I will say is d screen writer.. Dis person writes the play.. He's the initiator and the idea bearer of the movie.. Without the idea or writing of movie the editor can't edit.. What does the editor wants to edit when there's nothing written down.. Also Screenwriters are responsible for researching the story, developing the narrative, writing the screenplay, and delivering it, in the required format, to Development Executives. Screenwriters therefore have great influence over the creative direction and emotional impact of the screenplay and, arguably, of the finished film. They either pitch original ideas to Producers in the hope that they will be optioned or sold, or screenwriters are commissioned by a producer to create a screenplay from a concept, true story, existing screen work or literary work, such as a novel, poem, play, comic book or short story.

In the case of an individual he will employ the service of a good script writer to developed the story and the producer to direct both human and technical aspect of the movie. Other personnel such as cinematographer, actors and actresses are just film crew and not an author. Authorship goes to the person that initiate the story idea.

ReplyDeletebasically i will say the authorship of a movie, play or programme of any nature should go to the scriptwriter because he/she initiate the idea and he/she penned down the idea which serves as a blueprint to the director, cinematographer and the others.

i sincerely maintain that the writer is the author of the movie due to the age long adage that says that there is no smoke without fire, one preceed the other, so the writer remains our first point of call he/she is the author of the movie or programme.
Oxford Dictionary (6th edition) defines an author as "a person who creates or starts something". This therefore shows that the entire movie process has its foundation built on the writer's desk. The writer goes through the pain of conceptalizing an idea and then go further by putting pen to paper. It's that idea of his/hers that other personnel work on to bring out a movie. 'Things Fall Apart' wouldn't have become a movie if Chinua Achebe had not put pen to paper. To this end, the writer is the author.

ReplyDeleteI think that the authorship of any movie should go to the writer who is the sole originator of the work. He is the person who concieves, nutures and develops the idea. He is also responsible for transforming these ideas into visible form by writing it out for execution. The script writing stage is the most difficult of any movie production process. So as a writer he is the author and he only brings in other members of the crew who will contribute their perspectives to turn this script into a movie. However, it is important to state here that a writer cannot do it alone without other crew members but most importantly these crew members perspectives are useless without the script.

Most of such critics posits that since film is a pictorial medium, then the authorship should be credited to the cinematographer. For me, the author of a movie could be the director of the movie, he could even be a cast, but basically, he is the one from where the idea sterms; the generator of the story. He may not necesarily be the writer of the script. That is, he may contract profesionals who are grounded in script writing.

An author is the originator of any written word. ReplyDeleteTo me I will say that the author of a movie is not a one man’s affair. It can be said to be the scriptwriter because he gets the idea first, thinks of what to do with it and then develop the idea into something, it takes time and some processes for the idea to be actualized. On the other hand the director has a major role to play in making this idea a reality. After the writing of the script by the scriptwriter, the director takes the write-up and begins to make some corrections which at the end of everything the scriptwriter’s work might even be different from what the director has been able to put down.

These persons contribute to the actualization of a movie. Therefore the author of a movie can be said to be the scriptwriter and the Director. Note that without the Director there can be no movie.

He coordinates the actors moves. we know that the script writer writes but lets not forget that script writers sells there films out to the director . its also the duty of the director to add and subtract from what ever the writer has put down. so we cant say that the script writer is the author of the film. Despite the fact that the producer or director handles major parts in the making of a movie, the author of the movie remains the writer of the movie due to the fact that without a story line there will not be a movie. But if the ideas initiated are not put into actions, reality, or movies fpr end users, it becomes waste of effort and time, except if the screen writer is equally the director(single vision), but if not, the director is considered the author of the film because, they bring the ideas initiated by the writer, into life. They equally determines the locations, actors, make-up artistes, cinematographies, sounds and lightning technitians to work with. ReplyDeleteThe author of a movie is the script writer just like the author of a novel, who brainstorm by asking question about his topic and still gives the write up out for edition. At the end of the day the authorship of the book still goes to him. The script writer is the initiator and the originator of the idea. The creative concept comes from him. Although, production stage involved a lot of personnel like "actors, producer, director, camera man e.t.c" which makes the work a collaborative activities, without the script writer their effort will not be seen by the audience. Therefor, without the script writer there will be no film because the conceptualization of idea will not be.
ReplyDeleteThe author of a movie is the script writer, even if without an actor or the cinematographer there is no film, all still boils down to the script writer because he is the one that actually developed the idea, that is the creative concept and put so much commitment to put it on paper. This is likely to the author of a novel who is the writer, despite the fact that another person does the editing or reshaping, if there is no write up there will be no editing. So even if there are other artist who are crucial in making a movie like "the actor, the producer, the production designer e.t.c" they can only be effective if there is a write up.
ReplyDeleteProper preparation prevents poor performance, a poorly written script cannever achieve its purposive goal, good ideas begot good script, there is no movie without a set guildline which also is a script, a script is a guide through production, from a script you get to know all you need to know about production, characters,location, and all other details of a movie, meanwhile all these can only be achived through a team work who will come together to use initiative mind and end-up advancing creative abilities. ReplyDeleteThe script writer is credited as the Author because he is the person that develops all the idea. Any other person that takes part in making the movie just like the director can not be considered as the Author because without the script, there is nothing to direct. Just like a book, when the writer finishes compiling, he takes it to the printer to do his job before it can be called a book. in this case, we can not refer or call the printer the Author. Same is applied in film making.

He may not eventually be the sole writer of the story, but he influences the way the story is written because he is initiator of the idea. The idea is first conceived in his mind, then he develops it and goes ahead to write it out and employs other writers if he chooses to, but he determines how the story must be written because he alone has the picture of what he wants to see on screen. He may also decide to direct the movie himself or employ another director but the initiator remains the author of the movie. He influences the other personnels in the movie.

ReplyDeleteAn author is the creator or originator of an idea or a particular piece of writing. So i would say, the author of a movie is that person to whom idea of a the story comes to first. He may not actually be the scriptwriter because he may not know how to write a script and so he employe the scriptwriter to help him develop the story into a script. That is why in some movies the story is attributed to one person and the script to another. Although, in some cases he may be the scriptwriter that is if he can write a script, he may also have his own area of specialization either as a producer, director etc. So he could also function as a crew or cast member. In summary, an author of a movie is the 'STORY ORIGINATOR.'

Directors are responsible for turning the script into a sequence of shots. They also direct what tone it should have and what an audience should gain from the cinematic experience. Film directors are responsible for deciding camera angles, lens effects and lighting with the help of the cinematographer and set designer. They will often take part in hiring the cast and key crew members. They coordinate the actors moves and may also be involved in the writing, financing and editing of a film. They basically take part in all ramification of movie production, while others are secluded to just single roles.

Reason been that a script writer might be well constructed but if is not produce it, it be like a diamond shut in a cave. So a film can only achieve its aim when is produced. In the case of a novel writers they must have planned to finance all the budgeted expenses because the production of a novel is unlike the film."mr A" might have idea but the finance might not be there & due to this incapability he might decide to sell it to a more competent person that can produce it and automatically the producer who will bring it out for the society to see will automaticslly be the author of the film and is the producer that the film will be credited to,so to me the author of a movie is the producer.

ReplyDeleteThe success of a movie depends on the collective efforts of the entire production crew, ranging from the producer, the Director, the script writer, the cinematographer, the casts, etc. However, all these personels would have nothing to work on if there were no idea. Proper preparation, prevent poor performance. A poorly written script is a source of worry to a director; a good script is a guide to a better performance. However, a movie author can only be trace to the initiators route who originates the idea, he links up with other team and end-up with a production at the final stage, though a motive requires combination of efforts; with this, I strongly consider the script writer as the author of a movie.

ReplyDeleteI condered both the screen writer and director as the author b/cos the screen writer provides the written material which is then created by the director. At no point does the formal posess or is considered within the movie aspect. only when the screenwriter has chosen to direct or requested to consult by the director. even so, the director creates the movie & the writer the material. I look at a completed movie as a just built building. The screenplay is a blueprint used as a guide by the director/builder, who employs workers such as electricians, plumbers, dry-waller e.t.c. The builder has the final say as to how the building will look when he's done.There are so many variables the architect couldn't foresee & every vision needs to be modified when its wheels hit the pavement of reality, even though the architect had the original vision. Now, you can combine any number of participants who build the structure including director & screen writer into one person. But most movies are collaborative efforts. you will find out that many directors when receiving merit for their movies, will pay & refer to the screenwriter with utmost respect & sheer equality for the making of the story.
ReplyDeleteSir, to my own understanding, i will say there are two authors in a mivie which is the writer and the director, reasons being that if i pick up a novel and read, that it is A Stephen King's novel, i would be so sure that just about every word and idea in the book came from just one man, Stephen King. The writer in the sense that he initiates the idea, developes it spending the hard time it takes commiting that idea to actual words on paper and he also directs the movie himself, then he is the author of that movie. But if the writer goes ahead to hire a prefossional to direct the movie for him, then they both are authors of that movie because, the Director also has his own ideas to chip in. With this, it now becomes a joint effort of both the writer and the director.

In my own understanding, i will categorically say that the author of a movie can be any member of the production or even a cast in the movie; this is so because every member of the production crew`have its roles to play. However in film we are looking at not just the paper work, but how motion pictures, sound and other effects are combined to form a film that will make sense to the viewers. The writer initiates the idea and writes a story, but if he does not have the skill/technical knowledge on directing films his writeup will be likened to a drama or novel. Also, there are some writers whose job is to write and sell stories to directors who bring them to'life', whatever happens thereafter does not matter to him. Every member of the production crew is important, no doubts, however, there is someone who oversees what each member does, he takes the blame and credit for what the production is. The quality of the job depends on him. The more or less the quantity of a food condiment for instance, salt, in a meal is determined by the chef and he takes the blame and credit for whatever outcome. In the same vein, the Director of a movie checks the quantity of what other crew members are doing to get the quality he desires in the production. Come to think of this, at the beginning and end of every film/movie both local and foreign when the crew members are acknowledged, the Director is usually the last, because of the significant role he plays in the production. This does not mean that the writer is neglected, but in film what is needed is motion pictures.

ReplyDeleteThe author is a script writer, because he is the one that initialed the ideal, putting his ideal into a creative act. Mapping out his ideals in a way it would attract his audience. It is from his ideals that roles are been assigned.
So i consider the author of a movie to be a script writer.

He determines what goes into the movie and what ought not to. He paints exactly what the movie will look like. The director is considered as the author because all the good and the bad aspect of the movie is accredited to him. Take for instance, not all songs writers are song singers but the singers takes the authorship because he/she determines how the song will look like and how it will be suitable to the hear.

Even in our academic field, when we get an idea from somewhere, we determine how the idea will be presented to the audience and that makes use the author.
Moreover, there is nothing so new on earth again, its all about your ability and how creative enough to put together those ideas in such a way that will be suitable to the audience.
It should however be noted that, until an initiator of an idea can direct its idea into movie before he/she can be considered the author of such movie.
Authorship has to do with creating an idea that never existed. When one is reffered to as an author of a movie, he has the right to the copy and determines what is acted upon by the script writer, what to direct, what to produce, what to screne play, what to even edit, etc. Because of this, the author of a movie is the creator of the story idea.

Sir for me i say the writer of the script is the author,first an author is the inciator of an Idea,he created what he imagined,he alone can interprete the script,the writter could be the producer,in wchich case he has the chance to perticipate in the shooting of the script,he alone can commune with the Scipt,because he created the idea he is the author of the movie-Dania Queen Broadcast option

But in a situation by which the script is conceived by someone who is not the script writer but saw an idea and developed it into a movie, he or she is said to be the author because he is the originator of that movie.

He could write the script, direct the movie, or do the screenplay if he has the know-how to do so. If i bring a true life story for instance, and then i pay script writers to write the script, i am the author of that movie and not the script writers.

ReplyDeleteSir, based on the understanding from your last class, i will categorically, say, that the authorship of a movie, goes or should be credited to the Director of the movie the reason be, is because, the director of the movie, is the person or the individual, who calls the shots in any production, he/she, is the person who applies he/her technical know how, to make sure, that the movie comes out as best as possible.
ReplyDeleteSir, based on my understanding from your last class, i will state categorically, that the authorship of a movie, is or should be credited to the Director. The reason be, is because, the director is the individual, who applies his/her technical know how, to detect how the entire production of a movie would start and end. He/she, is the person, who produces what we watch on television, with his creative ideas. how the pictures would look like, the costumes, and every other thing in the entire production, is being controlled by the director.
