BIG BROTHER AFRICA AND THE AFRICAN CULTURE

Big Brother Africa is a television reality programme that does not need much introduction. How do you assess this programme in terms of preserving the African cultural heritage?

  1. big brother Africa does not preserve the Africa culture even though it promotes unity among Africa nations. The African cultural heritage is not preserved, because almost all the participant of the show imitates the western culture in terms of dressing, feeding, etc., not giving prior consideration to the esteemed Africa cultural heritage..

  2. Big Brother Africa television reality programme has less element of African culture preservance or heritage, this is shown in the mode of actions and the general way of life they present e.g they emulate the western culture forgetting the title/ theme of the programme that centers on African.instead of promoting good influence on the youths of Africans, rather it mostly portrays indecency amongst youths. The only advantage this reality show has done in the African culture / heritage is the unity it has brought to the African continent.

Its mostly Kenyans,Zimbabweans,Tanzanians and those from Malawi that portray little African culture.instead of promoting our heritage others prefer foreign cultures. and by so doing this, our heritage is at stake.
Of all our Nigerian participants only a few has uphold the cultural heritage of this country.( Ofuneka ,Geraldine and , Uti )others have dented our heritage with immoral attitudes.

  4. Big brother Africa show is an entertainment programme that bring together all the 54 African continent. Culture on the other hand is define as the sum total of the learned behaviour of a group of people that are generally considered to be transmitted from generation to generation. It also refers to as a cumulative deposit of knowledge, experience, beliefs, value, attitude, religion, meaning etc by a group of people. Linking this to the programme"Big brother Africa" it could be seen that different nudity things are learn from the participants representing different continent of Africa & the truth is that nothing is from A to Z of the show valuable to the cultural heritage of Africa because the programme only encourage lasciviousness & embodied by negative or and dubious alien culture, value & tendency. For a programme to be considered that is preserving a culture it must be best centered by strengthen & exposing our indigeneous culture in an inovative ways, not by encourage heretical beliefs in a society. One thing that the programme try to achieve is the unity created among the participants as it houses people of different culture together for a ralatively long period. But that it preserving the Africa culture,to me is "NOT".

  6. Big brother Africa does not recognise African cultural value, let alone preserve its culture. According to Wole Soyinka; as a format is without cultural and transformative posibilities. The programme shows a group of young people interacting and worshiping in their own way day in and day out, indifferent to the frenzy of religions extremists, within an intimate environment. That may speak meaningfully to viewers regarding one of the most deverstating crisis of cohabitation that currently confront us. This show i believe is a programme put together with the sole aim of uniting the Africans and reflect the Western culture to Africans.

  7. The Big Brother Africa was set up to unite all African countries together by putting different housemate from different African countries to live togther in one house for three months. But the main purpose of which it was made has not been achieved. The Big Brother Africa can not preserve the african cultural heritage because the programme add no value to the lives of the young people who are usually engrossed in watching it,it is only but full of immorality, if which censored will do much good to youth. The programme to me does not pass any message,it has no positive culture impact on our lives, if not that some people"DesPerados" sees it as short-cut to opportunity in life as wealth and becoming famous in life.

  8. Big brother Africa is a program that aim at uniting Africans, is about people from different countries in Africa, interacting and living in the same roof, there by showing if they can truly maintain their real character. The program is a game of choice, in the sense that is left for the audience to choose the person that has the character they like most. the program does NOT portrays Africa's culture because it is not centered on culture.

  9. Big brother Africa as a reality television show has in no way promoted Africa’s cultural heritage rather, it has only helped to dilapidate what Africa stands for. The level of immorality and nudity has made the show ‘un-african’. Unlike the western culture, African culture is known for morality which the Big Brother Africa show has failed to maintain. In other words, the Big Brother Africa show has succeeded in promoting the western culture which is detrimental to the African culture.
According to Sean Jacobs (2007, pg.856) in his write up titled “Big Brother, Africa is watching” he asserted that:
"Wole Soyinka, according to a Nigerian newspaper, called the show ‘banal, lacking anything to offer to the continent’ (Daily Independent,21 July 2003). Nigeria, he noted in a widely reported speech, would do just as well to put on its own reality television show: ‘All we need is just get some prostitutes on the streets and lunatics. They will go naked for nothing’(International Herald Tribune, 10 September 2003). Personally, he added, he would prefer to watch the crude productions of the Nigerian video industry than Big Brother Africa……."
In another development, Kenyan political scientist Stephen Ndegwa, a Senior Public Sector Governance Specialist with the World Bank and a mainstream democratic theorist, shared Soyinka’s disdain for the programme. He asked in an opinion article published by the Daily Nation (Nairobi) cited in Sean Jacobs (2007, pg. 856):
Why are we so fast in accepting trash provided it comes from the West? Why are
we not as aggressive in promoting our own lifestyles and values to the outside
world? I support the leaders of Malawi and Namibia, and the religious community
in Uganda for censoring the Big Brother Africa reality TV show. What do our children
learn from this show apart from watching housemates bathing in the nude and
throwing up after hours of indulgence? (Daily Nation, 12 September 2003).
To this end, the fact stands that the Big Brother Africa reality television show is not helping to promote African culture.

  11. Big Brother Africa show which is only for African countries which should have been used to preserve our African culture does not even have an iota of African culture. The programme only tries to bring different African countries together just to foster unity among them but fails to display African culture. Their way of life in the show is an opposite of African culture. The programme entails nudity and other Western indecent acts and that is not African culture. In short, it kills African culture. 12. What most of the
Housemates do in the house especially the females, is most or less a
slap in the face of African dignity. Some of these girls who should bear
the flag of sacredness for African woman hood, engage in drinking,
smoking and striping themselves, almost nude in front of live television
cameras. Most often, some of the Housemates get crazily drunk and
engage in acts better suited only for a pornographic movie.
Their wasteful feeding habits and gluttonous attitudes are quite far
from being African. A true African does not waste food because he is
aware there is someone somewhere who does not have enough to eat. Most
of them want to speak rap like the Americans, a fact that only goes a
long way to highlight how we seem to be quickly emulating western
culture at the expense of our rich African heritage. The Big Brother
Africa is a mockery of African culture and tradition. Since the inmates
are Africans, they should have been projecting the African cultural
    heritage.

I was ment to understand that Africans are known for modesty and not nudity.the dressing and lifestyle of The parcipants of this programme is just an imitation of the western culture which is in contrast with the African culture. Big Brother Africa has turned to be a romantic escapade, ful of immorality and promiscuity. I must say that the programme only promotes unity among Africans but does NOT preserve the African culture. 15. The Big Brother Africa reality program does not preserve the African cultural heritage due to the fact that most of the activities taking place in the program has noting to do with the African culture. For instance, the mode of dressing of the inmates, the type of food and manner of eating, the social life and mode of interaction among the housemates portrays foreign behavior. Initially in the onset of the program, top African men and women were invited into the house to educate and inspire the housemates but of recent, it no longer occurs. Therefore, Big Brother Africa is not preserving the African culture and is not educative. If I may suggest, they should borrow a leaf from another television program called Goge Africa which highly preserves the African culture. Thanks. Mary Attivi

  16. Big Brother Africa do not preserve African cultural heritage through it's show. African culture portrays values, morality, and peaceful coexistence which is our source of pride. Though,Big Brother Africa airs things that happen in real life but it ought to showcase African culture rather than smoking, alcoholism, sexual promiscuity, wasteful feeding habits, people with tattooed bodies that are not part of African culture. This attitude do not preserve Africa culture but promotes western culture culture,it also do not pass positive value to those watching.

big brother house is not promoting our African Culture at all. An
African man will not stripe himselves naked even though he is hot or he
feels like recieving air , an African man respect himselves in a way
that if he wants to have a sex with the oposite he dont expose himself
but respect the lady. but in big brother you see them kissing and
fooling themselves even when the whole world is looking at them oh

brother do preserve the african culture because the big brother
programme brings TOGETHERNESS, different representatives from various
african countries get to live in the same house for 90days this exercise
brings about UNITY. Apart from football and other sports activities big
brother is also one of the major entertaining programmes that unites
various nations. in preserving african cultural heritage also big
brother contestants tend to teach one another about their various
cultures for example their cultural dances and traditional dishes. some
of the contestant has mutual relationship in the course of the exercise
which may lead to marriage therefore different african nations
intermarry which strengthens unity among these nations. Big brother
therefore preserve the African cultural heritage to a large extent by

The Big Brother African Show does not promote African Culture, Rather is an entertainment show That bring all African countries together in one place to display their talents, That's Y some of the things they show in Big Brother is always at night cuz is not accepted by our culture (parents) so it doesn't preserve african culture or Heritage cuz they trying to immitate the western world in terms of public sex, public kisses and irrelevant dances that is not accepted in Africa Culture. Africa culture a woman must keep his body private for his husband alone to see and not for public display. But Big Brother Africa is not like that is an entertainment show, everything is allowed, no restrictment nakedness and sex, kisses in the public, but the african culture doesn't accepted that.

  24. Big Brother Africa is a reality television show created by John de Mol. The show is all about a group of persons from different countries of Africa living together in a large house, isolated from the outside world and continuously monitored by television cameras. As the name implies,"Big Brother Africa" was suppose to portray and preserve African "Culture and Heritage". But, ironically, the show is now used for sexual immorality, unnecessary mimicking of western culture, indecent dressing and for pretence purposes among others. The contestants are not in any way, showing respect for African culture and tradition. Africa is a continent that has dignity for "Manhood and Womanhood", but these so called contestants, have sex the way they like, wear whatever cloth dey like, and what is more? Go nude. Therefore, from the foregoing, it is obvious that The Big Brother Africa is not in any way, portraying or preserving African culture and heritage. Instead, it is helping to erode it. Big Brother Africa reality TV show, despite its virtues in developing certain skills such as, (painting, design, carving and the idea of peaceful co-existence among Africans), it still goes a long way to highlight how we (Youths) seem to be quickly emulating western culture at the expense of our rich African cultural heritage. Most of the daily actions of the housemates portrays values that are not worth emulating especially at this time when Africa is struggling to shrug off certain obnoxious practices it has been noted for.

  26. The big brother Africa TV Show has no positive influence. It deviates from our Africa Culture. The Participants don't practice our Africa culture. Different immoral acts are performed, indecent dressing and rough play between males and females. With all these, I can boldly say that the big Brother TV Show does not promote the Africa Culture. The Only good thing about the Big Brother show is that it brings together people from different parts of Africa Countries.

What mostly go on is talk, relationships, sex and fight which is totally not the Africa way of life, in the process building hatred among youths all over the continent who send their thoughts and it shows anger, hatred, and partiality among the young viewers. In my own opinion the show has not portrayed a good image for the countries, their participants and Africans in general.

  40. Big Brother Africa is a south African reality programme that brings 54 countries together for entertainment. In terms of preserving the culture of Africa, the philosophy contradicts the tenets of our cultural heritage. Our culture is damaged and smashed while we keep thinking that we are coping with globalization. It is really embarrassing on our culture.
In BBA, no African culture is allowed in the house. Wherever African culture is portrayed, it is linked with catastrophe like HIV/AIDS, war, and violence. Our local languages are called vanacula and are therefore not official and are therefore not worth to be used in public.
Also, the rate of exposure and nudity that the BBA reality show promotes was at it peak. Africans(housemates) and culture was exploited and insulted. For the first seven seasons, world viewers were given full access to nude pictures and live videos of housemates taking their bath(during shower hours). Also, games were created by the organizers that instructed housemates to go naked in the name of games and house task. This reality programme is of no value to the African culture as all its activities are gotten from western society.
It can be deduced that the show has been of no effect in preserving the values of the rich African culture, but with every season continually rob Africa of her pride.

Immorality in big brother africa is at it peaak, the african culture is exploited and taken for granted. the big brother africa show is of no value to the african culture because each season the african woman losses her pride and respect in the reality show.the show teaches the African woman to practise imorality and good deeds. though the Big Brother Africa promotes unity between the African countries in terms of preserving the cultural heritage of the continent it has failed because all the paricipants imitates the practices of the western culture that has brought the African culture to its lowest ebb.By Obienu Erovre Loveth

  44. Big brother africa is a tv reality show that is designed to entertain and inform.now to answer the question if big brother africa really preserve the african heritage or not,I will say yes and say no. Yes in the sense that it brings people together from different part of the world to showcase their talent and what they can do best which as a result brings about unity amongst them, and this could be seen in the africa cultural heritage. No because, lots of immoral things are performed during the show. This could be seen from people going nude in the show especially the females, and this has not in any way help to preserve the african culture and heritage which wαs why I said yes and no. 45. Big brother is a reflection of a ccommunity life as in peoples behaviour when put together to live in an environment. if i should rate BBA it has only about 10% impact in promoting African cultturel heritage, due to the fact that candidate from different culture are sent to represent there country in the house. Looking into the programme i will ague that the show is not design to promote African culture, rather it tries to study how people from different work, bacground, culture and belives can live together in a community, in terms of love, interpersonal relationship, social interaction and as well disput. I Agree with people who says that the immoral act in big brother does not potry our African culture but that of the western culture. in Africa the dawry is the certificate a man need in othe to have accesss to a woman. But in BBA youth live as though they were married. I agree that Big brother tries to show, that in real live people fall in love and out of love. some of the relationship end up in bed(immorality) others do not. Kelvin Pam(Nigeria) of Big brother season five did not sleep with Elezabeth from Tazania in the house but today they are happily married.
looking into the African cultural heritage which include, Art and craft, falklore and religion, clothing, cuisine, African music and languages. these element are not found in the BBA. therefore it is rith to say that the style of the TV programme is a copy of that of the western world which is a free style way of living.
Taking a live to a TV programme in Nigeria the AFRICAN POT shown in NTA and MY HERRITAGE shown in ITV BENIN, In these programme you will see culture in display. With this, it is clear that BBA is not promoting African culturel herritage but to know how people from different culturel bacground live together using the medium as a community, were people creat personal licence to freedom, relationship, love, conversations, games and disput.
therefore, Big Brother Africa has very little or no contribution to the African Cultural Heritage which centers on our Art and craft, falklore and religion, clothing, cuisine, African music and languages e.t.c. But these cultural heritage are not found in BIG BROTHER AFRICA TV REALITY SHOW. Rather it poltry the insencitive life style of the Western world

  47. Big Brother Africa, when it first started, preservance of African Culture was not really there, untill peaple had to complian about their non~chaliant attitude before, they now taught of bringing out rules and regulation that the various contestant will adhere to, in other to preserve the african cultural heritage, because in Africa, we are known for self respect, respecting elders, dressing properly and sexualy chaste as an African. but when the western world introduce Big Brother to Africa, they were doing it as the western world were doing theirs. now the present Big Brother is trying there best to caution whosoever default the rule of the game and there us penalty for it.
Now BBA is in Africa to bring unity, love, respect, peace among the various county that is involve, there are alot of people out there that are watching BBA will have the opportunity to learn from other peoples cultural heritage through the TV Reality programme,
So with this i will say that Big Brother Africa is helping to preserve the Africa cultural heritage.

The Big Brother Africa has not preserved our cultural heritage rather it has corrupted the country and her youths e.g in one of the segment such as the ''shower hour'' where contestants are shown on screen bathing naked for everybody to watch, they also try to borrow the foriegn culture which has not helped us, for instance sag dressing (i.e dressing half naked), this is as a result of what they watch from programs of this nature. Africa culture constitute unique and moral values, trying to imitate others might affect us negatively. 52. I will say Big Brother Africa does not promote Africa culture but they only entertain, educate and inform. Big Brother africa does not promote africa culture there are some reasons why big brother does not promote africa culture.
the behaviour of the in-mate they do not show good example of been an africa woman they dress naked, most parent would not want their children to watch the programme because it is not ideal for their view due to the emotional part of it. Big Brother Africa expose africa culture but it does not promote it in the sense of meeting different people from different walks of life knowing about their ways of life what they do and how they behave. 56. Big Brother Africa Reality Show was conned from the Big Brother Reality Game Show created by John de Mol.
From the sociological and demographic perspective Big Brother Africa or BB as it is often been refer to is center on an analysis of how people react when been forced to stay under close confinement with people from different background and ethnic group outside the comfort of their home or zone with the aim of bringing cultural, social and ethnic unity to the countries involved.
Alot as changed in a decade, the show as gone from an edgy show to a tired, torrid and dumping ground for assorted egomanic to debase show of shame.
The contestant or the housemate now envision or advocate the sayings of one of the character named Lakunle in Wole Soyinka's book titled The Lion and The Jewel when he described our culture as barbaric, arhaic, out-dated, uncalled for and shaming our heritage to the world apprasing the western cultural heritage refering to it as Modern Civilization an eye opener.
They (contestants or housemates) portary or imitate the western culture to the letter in terms of their display of debase and unethical culture, show of shame by engaging in illicit sexual activities on set and explicit european mannerism relegating the aims and objectives of the show which is to showcase our rich cultural heritage.
However, this is not to say that the show Big Brother Africa do not have anything to offer rather it still maintain its original aim which is uniting the bond between the countries involved and as such remains an unchangeable fact about this remarkable programme.
To this end, i love to recommend that the producer of this show should endeavour to re-activate the spirit of the show which is the showcasing of our rich cultural heritage, having in mind that Africa remains an enigma in her rich cultural endowment. let us shine fort like the true Africans that we are by displaying our rich cultural heritage anywhere we go. The beauty of Africa Cultural heritage remains an enviable fact in human history. Africa our motherland we love thee. IYAMU FAVOUR OLUWABUNMI.

  57. Big Brother Africa is a television reality programme that does not need much introduction because almost everyone have an idea of it. They must have either watched an episode of it or heard about it. It is a programme designed to foster unity among African countries as youths on approval of their country represent the country in the show. This representatives live together in the Big Brother house for a period of ninety days and on weekly basics housemates are evicted. The last man standing who has the highest vote is considered the winner for the year.
On this note, the sole aim of fostering peace and unity among African countries is achieved. However, despite the unity enjoyed by African countries through the programme, it has failed to preserve the African cultural heritage, as housemates no longer live but exist. They force the western culture on themselves even when it does'nt suit them. They eat foreign food, dress in western culture, even the language is foreign(the general way of life is borrowed, not African). They are ashamed to portray the African culture in other not to be seen as primitive or uncivilized and this is not a plus to the African culture. The uncensored transmission of obscene content which even children are exposed to is not African. They forget that it is better to be hated for what you are than to be loved for what you are not. if Big Brother Africa is the only avenue for the promotion/preservation of African cultural heritage, then our culture will be extinct in no distant time. 68. The TV reality programme, Big Brother Africa is an African concept and geared towards promoting and preserving the African cultural heritage. In-house members or participants are seen wearing their different traditional or native attires and we often see a display of African music with acompanying African percussions.Members are also allowed to practice their different religions without discrimination.
However, the old African society is known for decency and a good dress sense, in fact, decency is part of her tradition. But because of civilization and the impact of the western way of life on the African society through the new media and movies, the African culture is seen as primitive and archaic and therefore thrown away.
The Big Brother reality TV programme does not therefore completely preserve the African culture; nudity, moral decadence and a western accent among in-house members being a flaw in the African way of life.

The Big Brother African is a showcase of how to belong, getting to know people from different countries and relating with them. It sure brings togetherness of the African countries, but does not really have any cultural influence on our society. The show rather showcases the Western culture. In terms of preserving the African cultur, GOGE AFRICA television programme that is shown on AIT, is a good example. An African woman for instance, is surposed to be well dressed and reserved; she prides herself with dignity and integrity and above all, modest in her ways. The women in the show, resort to smoking and drinking, go nude and these are what people see on TV and emulate. Also, the food they eat, the way they dress, with tatoo alover their bodies, are all Western.
Therefore, the name of the show should be changed to something like,"Big Brother Western" becouse it has nothing in common with the African culture.

The reality show which make attempts at fostering unity among nations of Africa through live entertainment; but it does not portray the African culture in it. Examples include the food , the language spoken in the house, their dressing and the high rate of nudity that the show encourages; all in totality can be linked to the western culture. In my perspective, the Big brother African reality show does little or nothing preserving the African cultural heritage. The level of immorality and nudity has made the show ‘un-African’. Unlike the western culture, African culture is known for morality which the Big Brother Africa show has failed to maintain.

  90. Big Brother Africa Reality TV programme does preserve the African cultural heritage because all what the people in the house do is of the western world in terms of the dressing, food, behaviour, character e.t.c .

The programme shows a lot of nudity which is not part of Africa culture heritage. A very good example is were Luke and Jessica of 2012 Big Brother Amplified was having sex.

  91. there is no gainsaying that africa cultural heritage has had a shift of focus from what it used to be. Howerev, the detritoriation of our culture is not far from the encrouchment of the western culture. Africa culture and that of the western world suppose to be two parrale lines which cannot meet!!! But today is difficult to draw a line between both. THe inferiation of these western culture can be seen in one of the African culture, Big Brother AFrica. This programme has down played the beauty of africas culture by show casing some emotional scenes like romance and bedrooms plays which is not suppose to be a public scene as regards to the african culture. BBA has in no waypreserved the african cuture, rather has neutralised it in the area of dressing, as the ladies were seen exposing the homogenous zones of their body without the consideration of the public.

I for one, do not see BIG BROTHER AFRICA as a way of preserving the Africa culture. for the rate of nudity is very high for young ones and so can not be viewed by children.
their dress code has nothing to say about Africa, and only say bad about Africa. it has only helped in promoting the western culture.the African culture is a respecter of decency which the programme does not.
I see it to be a TV GAME SHOW set up to win money. the rate of immorality is very high that is why it was banned before it was later restricted to subscription. I remembered my daddy sending us to bed just to watch it without us around. the participants forget the theme of the show by emulating the western culture instead of promoting the African culture.
If asked to select a good African programme that promotes african culture I will choose GOGE AFRICA shown on NTA.

Big brother Africa is a reality show organized to unite different countries of Africa in terms of cultures, values, language and traditions.
Instead of this show to promote Africa cultures and traditions, it has not been able to fulfill the reason why it was organized. The content of the show is very foreign and at such does not give room for the Africa culture. Instead of promoting the Africa culture, the program has succeeded in imposing foreign culture and life style in the audience. It is observed that people who watched the program are likely to act the same way.
Africa way of dressing is not portrayed in the program. They imitate the western style of dressing and at such neglecting the African way of dressing.
The use of African languages is rare. They also imitate the way the western people speaks and at such neglecting the African languages.
The content of the program sexually inclined. This is why the program is rated 18years and above. This is contrary to the African tradition that preaches decency. It is because of this sexual content that spurred the National Assembly of Nigeria to pass a law, calling for the program to be blocked in Nigeria.
In conclusion, big brother’s Africa that is supposed to build African culture and tradition, has not been able to live up to expectation why it was organized and at such the program should be discarded by those countries which receive the signal, because it has caused more harm than good.

But the question how do i assess the programme in terms of preserving the african cultural heritage?
I will say the programme does not preserve the african culture. Despite the fact that it brings people to stay under one roof which can be referred to as communal living which is one of the habits of africans.
It does not promote african heritage because the attitudes of housemates walking around almost naked and dating themselves is not an african practice, also most activities carried out in the house and even the food the housemates eats reflects more of other continents than our own africa.
And lastly, during this stipulated period of time, the housemates tends to stay idle discussing on irrelevant issues and this is not one of the practices of africans because africans are known to be hard working citizens.

  106. Big Brother Africa is a reality show that brings different people within the same continent(Africa) but different countries together, with the aim of providing a platform whereby contestants can tolerate each other, in terms of attitude and character.(positive and negative).
In terms of preserving African culture, contestants display its countries cultural heritage in a way of learning languages, dressing and African delicacy from other countries.
Big Brother Africa brings different individuals together to express each cultural heritage. Each individual yearns to learn new things from new people. For example, last year, they learn more about Mozambique cultural heritage, the popular Ghanian dance step, "Azonto", Ola and Chris presented a programme on Yoruba culture.
Also, they display quality artifacts or dress in a traditional attire which displays each individuals culture. In a positive sense, BIG BROTHER AFRICA PROMOTES AND PRESERVES THE RICH AFRICAN CULTURE.
However, culture been total way of life can either be positive or negative. The contestants are just trying to be themselves, and not pretending. Big Brother Africa is not all about acting, whereby you act what you are not. Immorality displayed in Big Brother Africa is just the way of life of some people.
In my own opinion, the immorality in terms of nudity should rather not to be assessed by the audience but only the moderators. OGUNLEYE AJIKE. S

It is true that big brothe africa is an intrating TV show unifies 54 african countries bringing them together to share their different cultural heritage and there by playing one of the significant function of culture,To buttress the above,it is pertinent to look at the meaning of culture by Porter (1972),He defined culture as the cumulative deposite of knowledge, experience, meaning, beliefs, value, attituds, religions, concepts of self, the universe relationships, hierarchies of status, role expectations, spatial relations, and time concept acquired by a large group of people in the course of generations through individual and group striving,Apart from this integrating function, the big brother Africa is only degrading the values, moral, norms of Africa culture as most of the participants always exhibits high level of immorality and irresponsible acts that are contrary to the africa culture but at the same time imitating the western world and their culture.

People tend to forget quickly that it an entertainment show intends to keep it viewers glued to the set but how we will it be done without those so called" obscene scenes" . If this things are not there I bet most would not be interested after all it's no singing competition . Each country provides a contestant living in an isolated house while trying to avoid being evicted by viewer and ultimately winning a large cash prize at the end of the show. The show is co-produced by Edmond SouthAfrica.
Big Brother Africa is suppose to present to the world the richness of the African way of life, all that should transpire should be what can transmit a positive value to those watching the game, but the reverse is the case.
The obscene and vulgar conversation, the gossip, quarrel, arrogance, hypocritical nature of some of the house mate, and some instance were most of their body are full of tattoos, nose and tongue rings for girls, ear clips and shabby hair styles for the men, anklets and several others things which African parents consider almost a taboo for their children. Most of them what to speak rape like the Americans and the Europeans, a fact only goes a long way to highlights how we seems to be quickly emulating western culture at the expends of our rich African heritage.
Despite the fact that the show is rated a 18 and above, the morality aspect of the show and the value portrayed by it actors which includes excess smoking, alcoholism, sexual promiscuity, idleness etc. What the house mate does especially the females is more or less slap in the face of Africa dignity. It is indeed shameful that girls who should bear flag of sacredness of Africa womanhood drinks, smoke, and slips themselves almost nude in front of live television camera, some engage in the act better suited only for a pornographic movie.
Although the idea of co-existing is still very much in place. Some times fans still finds the theme selling and chatting away in a friendly atmosphere at times in cause of such chat good and useful ideas are exchanged, the fact that some of the house mate who misbehave to the extent of getting into a fight are punished its goes to demonstrate African cultural heritage, virtue is rewarded and vice punished. But whatever happens in that isolated house is not African in the making and does not promote or sustain African cultural heritage. If it’s really African, for the fact that it involves African countries, things like exhibition of diverse African culture through food, African music, dance, arts and craft etc, should be done in that house, and not things like singing foreign music, nudity and unwholesome lifestyles which are purely western in nature and not accepted in African norms and culture. 138. Big Brother Africa is a reality show aimed at promoting unity within the Africa continent.
But it has gone beyond this aim as most participant of the show now practice nudity in the name of imitating western culture in terms of dressing which is capable of thwarting the Africa culture.

  139. The Big Brother Reality Show is an entertaining programme that gives an open opportunity to individuals from different countries to exhibit their individual attitude. In this regard, it simply has nothing to do with the African culture as every individual in the house act the way he/she pleases. On a personal note, it is the participants who are expected to portray African culture in the house based on individual tradition or culture. imagine for example having Tonto Dike represent Nigeria in the next edition of Big Brother African starting May 2013. What cultural trait will she portray knowing that imitate the Western style of living?

  140. The Big Brother Africa TV show has more negative effect on the rich African cultural heritage. Most often than not, house mates prefers to act Western in trying to gain audience support. Although, on few occassions, they dance and are dressed in their traditional attire. Their mode of dressing, food, and imoralities, promotes the Western culture. For example, it is against the African tradition to engage in sexual activity with a partner without due process and parental approval. More than that, Africans are known for hard work, but the BBA show encourages laziness among viewers and house mates alike. House mates wake in the morning and starts drinking, and gossipping. As a matter of fact, there is need for a reviw of the programme if it must preserve the African culture.

  141. Big Brother Africa reality show does not preserve Africa heritage because Africa as a continent has a long cultural heritage of decency and orderliness. This has being discarded in the big brother reality show.It does not preserve Africa culture rather it promote unity among the 54 contestant from the Africa countries. The show exhibit nudity for viewers,The show emulate the western culture leaving their own culture behind. What most housemates do is a slap in the face of Africa dignity. The show does not portray the real Africa culture instead the copy the western culture which we see obviously like the way they use wrong words, the food they eat, their dressing is more of western culture which is not suppose to be.It kills the Africa culture instead of preserving our great Africa heritage.

  142. The Big Brother reality tv programme to an extent, preserves the African culture. For example, participants somtimes, sing their traditional songs, dance, and tell African tales in the house. Also, the fact that they are allowed to worship in their various religions, portrays the same. However, other programme schedules in the house promotes the Western world. The way they go nude during shower hours, is not in line with the African tradition. It is therefore, not out of place to conclude that the BBA show promotes both the Western and the African culture, expecially so when the concept was a foriegn one in the first place.

  147. ABE MATTHEW O. : The incursion of dubious alien cultures, values and tendencies is best countered by the strengthening and exposure of indigenous cultures, ideally in innovative ways. These indigenous cultures would have been best exposed and preserved with a widely viewed programme like the Big Brother African how. Nevertheless, while some scholars have argued that the programme is a good unifying factor to the african people, others hold that it is anti-african and unethical to the rich culture of Africa. Commenting on this, Prof. Wole Shoyinka said, thus: "Even Big Brother Africa, a series i thoroughly detest suitably overhauled is not, as format, without cultural and transformative possibilities. To be able to watch, for instance, a group of young people - Christian, Muslim, Buddhist and traditional believers, interacting as normal beings, worshipping in their own way day in day out...." This is to say that the BBA show has some elements that are preservative of the African Tradition. Also, the origin of Caren Igho, the winner of the 6th edition of BBA, was identified by most viewers then, because of the way she was dressed during one of their tasks. However, house mates tend to act 'Western", probably as a winning strategy. This is seen in their conversations, dress sense, eating, and sexual activities that are purly not in line with the African tradition. Though rated 18, teens that are not mature enouph, use their smart phones to easily access shower hours, watching obscene and imoral scenes. Summarily, though there are some African elements in the show, but it is largely Western in concept and content and should be reviwed to better suit the rich cultural heritage of Africa.

There are most reasons why Big Brother Africa does not promote cultural heritage for example take a look at the in-mate, the way they behave in the house which does not show good example of been an african woman.
Most parent would not want their children to watch the programme because it is not ideal for their teenage view due to the emotional part of the programme.

  151. EVIENBOR EHIJE LAWRENCE: The Big Brother Africa reality show has gained a wild viewership not only accross the African continent, but globally. Funny anough, this popularity sterms from the imoral activities of house mates in the Big Brother house. Most times, people take interest more in a programme if it allows for nudity, smoking, drunkeness and other social vices. Because of this, the show rather than preserve and promote the African tradition, destroys it. For example, it is unafrican to just meet a girl and within few weeks, engage in sexual contacts without paying her bride price. It is also unafrican to wake up in the morning, and start drinking, smoking and dancing.
The Big Brother Africa show therefore, does not completly preserves the African tradition.

  153. Big Brother Africa reality show has not had any positive impact on the African culture.instead it has polluted our system with a lot of imported negative culture.
the original objective behind the show which i think was to promote unity among Africa countries has been defeated as the show can be classified as pornography because of the high level of immorality going on among the housemates all in the name of being real.
In fact, with each passing day, it is as if the real objective of the show is being lost. This is because the level of immorality and indecency appear to be growing with each new set of contestants who come on board.
The question now is who is to blame? is it the contestants, the producers, or the director?
It is note worthy however to remind us that Africa has a culture of moral decency, but it is very painful to realize that we are loosing this cultural value to the western world that is without culture.

  182. To start with, apart from the fact that Big Brother Africa’s contestants come from different parts of Africa which is a sign of unity, I don’t see any other culture they are preserving.
For instance¸ the inmates don’t dress in any way pertaining to African culture (apart from deliberate days where they have to dress traditionally). For most of their dressing is of the Western world, which mostly insults decency, common sense and good sense.
Unlike the west, Africa is known for morality and decency, but this has been thrown away. What culture is there to preserve when the so called reality TV show does not hide the nudity of inmates, their dirty behavior, and the nasty things they do.
What kind of reality TV show is that where sex and sexuality is not hidden, but shown to all, both adult and children. This is very wrong, to think the programme is not restricted to adult alone, these things should not be present.
We know that Big Brother reality TV show is interesting, watched by many both old and young and probably have good intention, but some things need to be checked to actually balance the main reason why it came into existence.

As much as there is parental control, the onus rests on parents to effectively utilize it so as to prevent teens from watching it. The Big Brother Africa show features different African traditional dances, songs, and allows for the different religions of house mates in the house. However, there is need for the conveners of the programme to review the content and activities of housemates to check the level of drinkings, nudity, and immoralities that go on in the Big Brother house so the African content of the show is pronounced.

The fact that it allows house mates to worship in their different religions in the house, dress in their cultures and tradition, depending on the programme schedule of the house, sing their traditional songs, and share different values and beliefs is an evidence.

The big brother Africa reality show, does not in any way preserve the Africa cultural heritage, because majority of the activities the show and the housemates engage themselves in, is positioned towards sex and immorality, and this is why, children are not allowed to watch the show. if really it preserves African's cultural heritage, then it will not be rated 18 and above.

  189. The Big Brother Africa is television reality show that does not need much introduction because almost all African youth have watched it or aware of it. The show is produced by Endemol South-Africa. Each country provides a contestant living in an isolated house under 24hours camera surveillance for 90days while trying to avoid being evicted by viewers and ultimately winning large cash prize at the end. On the other hand, African cultural heritage is an expression of the ways of living developed in a community and passed on from generation to generation artistic expression and values. In assessing this show from the aspect of preserving African cultural heritage, it focuses on the European life style than African culture, in terms of dressing, alcohol, even the pattern of entertainment etc. African culture is not known for nudity were people do not value their body but the show has created a negative picture about African culture, that one can go naked and even involve in immoral activities.
Although, in terms of fostering African unity, the show has brought contestant from different countries as a housemate in respective of their family background. Therefore the show has not preserved African cultural heritage because with the way it is going it will wipe away African culture with time, if it continues.

  190. The show Big Brother Africa that is co- produced by Endemol south Africa is aim to unite all African countries in one house for three months.
Big Brother does not preserve the African heritage because what most of the housemates do in the house especially the females does not preserve the dignity nor the cultural heritage of Africa. it has made the young youths to loose touch with the values which Africa is known for.
Even though it promotes unity among Africa Nations, it does not preserve our cultural heritage because its goal is not achieved.

  192. Big brother Africa has in no way promote or preserve the Africa cultural heritage that is suppose to be preserving, rather, it's promoting western culture. Big brother Africa is a reality show that last for 91/98 days per season with different housemate representing different Africa countries. It's a show that is suppose to show case Africa richness to the world but most of what we see are female housemate, drink, smoke get drunk and strip in front of live cameras, while the male appear with all sorts of hair styles and tattoos all over their body. They do all sort of things that's not tolerated in Africa. Though, it unite the people of Africa by making contestant from different country stay together in an isolated house without any racial discrimination among them. Africans are known to be responsible in all their doings but this show has proven otherwise. Even children are not allowed to watch the show because of the high rate of nudity. However, we should not forget that it's business for those behind it and in the world, what comes first is profit therefore, what sells is what is aired. We should note that not in all cases we should allow finance to come first. those people behind this should for once think of promoting African culture not the western culture. To this end, i will say BBA has not promote Africa culture the way it should. SHEILU SULEIMAN AISHAT.

  194. Big brother Africa television reality show is an avenue for young African youths to explore their talents in whatever way they feel they can. It is a medium to promote African unity but it does not preserve our cultural heritage in any way because the way the ladies dress to expose their bodies is not African in nature. And sometimes their sexual activities is shown live on the screen but Africans believe that sexual intercourse ought to be a secret thing. With all these activities in Big Brother Africa it does not preserve our cultural heritage in any form. Eghenayariore Augustina Osato.

  195. The BBA show, does not in any way preserve or portray the Africa cultural heritage. this is simply because of the fact that almost every area/aspect of the show, is positioned towards sex and immorality. In a show were housemates who before their coming together have partners out side, only for them to come into the house and begin to engage themselves in sexual immorality with one another does not portray the Africa culture in any way at all. the only good aspect of the BBA show, is the fact that it unites all the africa countries together.

  196. The Big Brother Africa show has nothing to do with preserving African culture. As a matter of fact, the idea of the show is probably put together by some group of persons whose intention is to make money through entertainment. Their intention I guess is not to promote African culture because it is possible that the organizers or initiator have little or no idea about African culture. Osita Bright

  197. I don't believe in the Big Brother Africa Show in preserving our own culture as Africans. The show speaks of immorality and promotes the culture and life style of the Westerner no wounder it was banned from local TV stations in Nigeria. The show speaks of Nudity and unimaginable attitude which the organizers of the show wants the participants to portray to the public as they form and draw their conclusion from such. In my own opinion, the Big Brother Africa Show do not preserve the African culture. Osigbemeh Abdulfatai Momodu

  198. Big Brother does not preserve Afica culural heritage, in the sense that there is nothing in Big Brother Africa show that portray anything about the Africa culture. A programme that cannot be seen by children doesn't promote our culture. So the Africa culture is not preserve.

  199. To me personally, Big Brother Africa do not in any way preserved Africa Culture, with out been told we all watch BBA and we saw how immorality, nudity and unimaginable attitude the so called Africa participants put on. and this is how the so called BBA pick their winner every year, what a shame on the culture, integrity and the people of Africa. due to this immorality, local tv stations are not allow to air it and its one of the reason Nigeria Senate ask DSTV to stop showing it in Nigeria, only God know why the show is back on air in Nigeria. the BBA is not a show that preserved Africa culture rather, it a show that preserved Western Culture.
